Application of data protection in the Finnish Meteorological Institute

The Finnish Meteorological Institute has revised and updated its personal data processing and informing policy in accordance with the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (2016/679). The regulation will apply from 25 May 2018.

The Regulation stipulates that all processing of personal data must comply with data protection principles. The Finnish Meteorological Institute processes its personal data lawfully and transparently. The use of personal data is informed, among other things, by means of privacy notices. The data will only be used for the purpose for which it was originally collected. Personal Data Request

The data subject has the right to verify their own personal data. The request for personal data can be sent to the Finnish Meteorological Institute's postal address or by e-mail kirjaamo@fmi.fi. When requesting data, the necessary information must be provided, such as the name, address, the relevant data to be checked and the period for which the data is available. The data controller only provides personal data to the data subject themselves.

Data breach affecting Valtori (Published: 2.4.2026)

A data security incident targeting mobile service data managed by the Government ICT Centre Valtori took place on 29–30 January 2026.

The incident also affected the Finnish Meteorological Institute and its current and former personnel.

According to information received by the Finnish Meteorological Institute from Valtori, the following data of current and former personnel may have been compromised: name, work email address, Windows username, and information on access rights groups.

The Finnish Meteorological Institute emphasizes the importance of following information security guidelines and maintaining general vigilance, particularly with regard to potential phishing attempts.
