This accessibility statement explains how well the Finnish Meteorological Institute online service complies with the Act on the Provision of Digital Services, what shortcomings there are in the accessibility of the website and how you can give us feedback on accessibility problems.

The Finnish Meteorological Institute is responsible for this online service. We want as many users as possible to be able to access our digital services. We take accessibility into account in the development of digital services.

How accessible is the website?

This online service largely meets the A and AA level accessibility criteria required by law (WCAG criteria 2.1). The online service has some shortcomings in accessibility, which are described in more detail below.

Content or features that are not yet accessible

  • Certain images have inaccurate alternative texts. (WCAG 1.1.1)

  • There are some inaccurate and undescriptive link texts in the online service. (WCAG 2.4.4)

  • Focus order is inconsistent in certain sections of the online service. (WCAG 2.4.3)

  • Certain colour combinations in some of the graphs do not meet the minimum colour contrast requirement. The semantic structure is communicated visually but not programmatically. (WCAG 1.4.11)

  • The semantic structure of the online service is not clear in certain sections of the website. Tables have been used for layout purposes. Certain pages do not have an appropriate heading hierarchy. (WCAG 1.3.1, 4.1.2)

  • There is no keyboard access to certain content and functionality, for example the search results. (WCAG 2.1.1)

  • In the Finnish and Swedish versions of the online service, there are terms in English which have not been appropriately marked as being in English. (WCAG 3.1.2)

  • Certain user interface elements are not programmatically determinable. The local weather search and resetting the search field do not work consistently via assistive technologies. There are buttons which do not have a programmatically determinable label. Dynamic changes not announced via assistive technologies. (WCAG 1.3.1, 4.1.2, 4.1.3)

  • The mark-up is not fully valid. (WCAG 4.1.1)

An effort will be made to correct the shortcomings listed in this statement during 2021 - 2022.

Accessibility requirements do not apply to certain content

The online service provides map-based weather information. Under the law, map content does not need to meet the accessibility requirements. The online service includes videos that are not accessible without captions and audio description. Under the law, video content published prior to 23 September 2020 does not need to be made accessible retroactively or be removed from the website.

How have we tested accessibility?

The observations in this accessibility statement are based on a third-party assessment of whether the online service meets legal requirements. The online service was published on 2 June 2020.
