High-quality research is utilized to develop services to benefit our everyday life. Visible examples are improvement of weather forecasts, development of new expert and warning services as well as applications of the newest research results.
FMI's researchers publish about 300 peer-reviewed articles annually.
In Science News we publish current information about FMI's studies on the weather, the sea and the climate.
Research carried out by the Finnish Meteorological Institute and the University of Eastern Finland studied the change processes for small-scale woodburning emissions both in darkness and in simulated daylight.
In fresh combustion gas, the majority of organic compounds are carbonyls (such as acetaldehyde) and aromatic compounds (such as benzene). As the emissions age within the environmental chamber, the concentrations of gaseous organic compounds decreases significantly. In contrast, an increase in the mass of organic compounds was observed for the particulates contained within the emissions.
The ageing of the emissions proceeded differently in darkness compared to daylight. In dark conditions, a lot of organic compounds containing nitrogen were formed, including both gaseous and particulate forms. In daylight conditions, in contrast, there was an increase in concentrations of certain gaseous carbonyls, and particularly of acidic anhydrides.
