Sustainability in the Finnish Meteorological Institute
Sustainability and responsible actions are an essential part of the Finnish Meteorological Institute's mission and everyday work.

The themes of sustainability are included in our strategy. We want to produce information to safeguard the future so that no one will be caught out by the weather. Cooperation with domestic and international stakeholders is the cornerstone of our operations. We observe, study and develop services so that we can produce information to support both short-term and long-term decision-making and preparedness.
The Sustainability report highlights the Finnish Meteorological Institute’s contribution to the UN Sustainable Development Goals
Progress on sustainability goals was advanced in diverse ways in 2025:
We expanded and developed the air quality monitoring network and actively supported the implementation and national preparation of the EU’s new Air Quality Directive.
We developed weather, climate and preparedness services and leveraged new technologies, such as artificial intelligence, to produce increasingly accurate forecasts and impact assessments.
We supported climate-related decision-making and adaptation by participating in scientific panels, publishing reports, and developing open tools for climate risk management.
We strengthened research infrastructure by establishing an Arctic satellite calibration and validation centre in Sodankylä together with ESA.
Internationally, we implemented around 45 development projects in over 40 countries and continued cooperation, among others, with the Ukrainian meteorological service.
We reduced the environmental impact of our operations: for example, travel-related emissions continued to decrease and energy consumption declined.
We invested actively in staff wellbeing, competence development and leadership, and job satisfaction remained at a high level.
Our research activities remained strongly open: approximately 95% of peer-reviewed publications were published as open access.
The 2025 Sustainability report describes our work in relation to the following Sustainable Development Goals:
Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages (SDG 3)
Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable (SDG 11)
Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts (SDG 13)
Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development (SDG 17)
