Climate Impacts and Adaptation
The Climate Impacts and Adaptation unit has four research groups: Extreme Weather and Climate Change, Climate Change and Future Cities, Weather and Climate Applications, and Climate Change Economics and Seasonal Forecasts. The staff consists of about 30 experts. The unit publishes the FMI’s monthly and yearly climate bulletins in Finnish. It also is responsible for revising and maintaining the Climateguide.fi web portal.
The unit's groups
Extreme Weather and Climate Change
Our group studies Finland’s changing climate and how climate change effects extreme weather phenomena of societal significance. With our research, we also enable the improvement of the predictability of the impacts of extreme weather phenomena both in the current and future climate.
Group Leader: Dr. Anna Luomaranta, tel. +358 50 383 5358
Climate Change and Future Cities
We are a multi-disciplinary group, who research the physical, social and economic impacts of climate change. To support climate neutrality for present and future cities, we provide scientific knowledge and, together with our partners and end users, develop weather and climate resilient solutions.
Group Leader: Dr. Thomas Kühn, tel. +358 50 521 8291
Weather and Climate Applications
Our group studies climate variability, change, and impacts with a particular focus on microclimatological and biometeorological research. We actively engage in climate communication and develop climate data and map services as well as applications for different societal sectors, and across spatial and temporal scales.
Group Leader: Research Professor Juha Aalto, tel. +358 50 409 0963
Climate Economics and Seasonal Forecasts
Our group focuses on climate economics research and the development of sub-seasonal and seasonal forecasts. We also study how climate change affects the skill of sub-seasonal and seasonal forecasts.
Group Leader: Dr. Eeva Kuntsi-Reunanen, tel. +358 29 539 5323
Theme managers
Climate Resilience Theme Leader Dr. Heikki Tuomenvirta: Monitoring and anticipating developments in the operational environment related to climate change adaptation, ensuring strategic funding, and contributing to research projects and commissioned work
Long-range Forecasting Development Theme Leader: Dr. Andrea Vajda: Long‑range climate impact forecasts to enhance preparedness, transforming forecasting research into scalable, user‑focused services, ensuring strategic funding, and advancing scientific expertise.
