Sea areas
In weather forecasts and warnings concerning sea areas, an internationally agreed division into areas is used. In addition to wind warnings, those traveling in Saimaa's water basin are given wind forecasts and ice information, because Saimaa is counted as a sea area due to the channel connection. Finland's sea areas are divided into 11 sea areas.
Saimaa
Depending on the weather conditions, in warnings and forecasts, the Saimaa water basin can either be a single area or it can be divided into two parts. The area to the south of Savonlinna is called the Southern part of Saimaa, and the area to the north is called the Northern part of Saimaa.
