The Finnish Meteorological Institute's open data has been available for 10 years
Through the Open Data service it is possible to download the Institute's data sets in machine-readable format free of charge.The weather forecast made by the meteorologist of the Finnish Meteorological Institute that has now been added was the most often received wish from the users of open data. Using their expertise, the meteorologist of the Finnish Meteorological Institute has refined a forecast using weather model data that best describes the current weather in Finland and the surrounding areas for the weather forecast feature launched in the open data service.
The weather and climate have a very broad impact on the functions of society and people's everyday lives. “The Finnish Meteorological Institute wants to ensure that existing weather information is available as diversely as possible in different distribution channels. The importance of technical interfaces has continuously increased, and we have wanted to be a pioneer in the development of open data,” says Juhana Hyrkkänen, the head of the Weather, Sea and Climate Service Centre.
Weather observations are the most popular data so far
Measured by download volumes, the most popular open datasets of the Finnish Meteorological Institute in the past ten years have been Finnish weather observations, weather forecast models, lightning observations and radar images.
The Finnish Meteorological Institute's open data service also provides radiation data from the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority, FinTraffic's traffic data and local air quality measurement data produced by municipalities. In addition, large datasets produced by the Finnish Meteorological Institute, such as radar data, have been distributed through the Amazon cloud service (AWS) since 2017.
