Finnish Meteorological Institute’s data is shared on Amazon’s cloud service

The Finnish Meteorological Institute is continuing sharing large datasets on a cloud services. Now open radar data is also available in Amazon's Public Data Sets program. A radar archive extending until 1998 will also be retrospectively uploaded to the Amazon Cloud.

The Amazon Web Service cloud platform (AWS S3 Bucket) offers measurement parameters obtained from each radar, projected into images, as well as composite images covering the whole of Finland. Volume data, i.e., measurement data, is also available from individual radars. The data is in the same format and has the same content as it has when it is used by the Finnish Meteorological Institute. Radar data becomes available immediately after it has been processed. Typically, the delay between taking a measurement and making it available is less than five minutes. Unlike the Finnish Meteorological Institute's open data portal, old data is not cleaned from the AWS cloud platform. In addition, a measurement data archive, covering retrospectively the period from now back to 1998, will be included in sharing through the AWS platform.

Data can be downloaded by all users regardless of having AWS account. A decision on sharing data on the AWS cloud service will always be made for two years at a time. In other words, data will be shared on the cloud service at least until 2022.

The data license is the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0). Users can therefore use, edit and share data freely, as long as the original source is indicated. A more detailed description of the content, parameters and sharing of data can be found in the documentation Radar data on AWS S3
