Wind warnings for land and sea
The following warnings are given for sea areas: strong wind advisories, warnings for near gale-force/gale-force wind, storm warnings and hurricane warnings. Warnings about strong wind are given for land areas; in addition, strong wind advisories are given for inland lakes.
Wind warnings for sea areas use the wind speed average for 10 minutes. Warnings about wind gusts are given for land areas.
Wind warning for sea areas
- hurricane warning: 10-minute average wind speed over 32 m/s
- storm warning: 10-minute average wind speed 21–32 m/s
- warning for near gale-force/gale-force wind: 10-minute average wind speed 14–20 m/s
- strong wind advisory: 10-minute average wind speed 11–13 m/s or strong gusts (only during the summer season from 1 May to 31 October)
Wind warning for land areas
- strong wind advisory for inland lakes (1 May–31 October): 10-minute average wind speed of at least 10 m/s or gusty wind
- wind warning for land areas: the warning has three different warning limits. A warning is issued when the wind speeds during gusts exceed 20, 25 or 30 m/s over a large area.
- severe thunderstorm warning: the warning has three different warning limits. A warning is given when thunderstorms are accompanied by gusts at speeds over 15, 25 or 30 m/s.
Early warnings are also issued on strong wind. Whenever necessary, the warnings are updated twice a day by 4:00 a.m and 3:00 p.m.
Early warnings on winds for sea and land areas are issued three days in advance:
- Warning on gusts of wind for land areas, 3 risk levels: 20, 25 and 30 m/s.
- Strong wind warning for sea areas May–October, 14–20 m/s
- Storm warning for sea areas, 21–32 m/s
- Hurricane warning, at least 33 m/s
An early warning on thunderstorm wind gusts two days in advance:
- Three risk levels in use: 15, 25 and 30 m/s.
