Information about UV radiation provided in summer
Warnings are accompanied by information on strong ultraviolet radiation when the ultraviolet index (UVI) is at least 6. This reading is reached in Southern and Central Finland a couple of times a summer, both before and after Midsummer.
Besides information bulletins, the Finnish Meteorological Institute maintains a UVI service that gives advice on when and where people should protect themselves against the sun. UV index values vary in Finland over a wide range, depending on the season.
In addition, Finnish UVI observations are available from the Institute’s measurement stations in Utö, Helsinki, Jokioinen, Jyväskylä, Sotkamo and Sodankylä. Owing to cloudiness, the observation curve is most often below the forecast curve.
