Users keen to know about the weather every day
The survey results showed that users of the FMI online service are strongly committed to its use: 69% of respondents reported visiting the website daily, while 23% reported weekly use. 95% of respondents indicated that they found from the website all the information they needed. Positive feedback was given in particular on the website’s presentation of FMI as a trustworthy and professional organisation. A total of 1,357 of respondents were visiting the site for the first time. In addition to weather data, these first-timers were particularly drawn to the forecast provided for the aurora borealis. Thousands of respondents also provided feedback and development proposals through free-form comments added to their survey response. A warm thank you to all who provided this extra information in their responses! All this feedback will be used to develop the service.
Tips for getting more from the web service
The Download Observations service allows you to search at any time and free-of-charge for observation data from the archives of the Finnish Meteorological Institute. Only one in four respondents knew about this service. Those who had used it had mostly found it easy to use. Try out the Download Observations service
The popular Auroras service indicates the likelihood of seeing the aurora borealis. The service can be found in our online service on the Auroras and Space Weather page.
There are dozens of weather symbols used for weather forecasts, and it is not easy to remember the exact meaning of all of them. Desktop users can view the description of a weather symbol as a ‘tooltip’ by moving their mouse pointer over the symbol in question. On many mobile devices, meanwhile, you can view the description in a small separate window by briefly pressing the symbol. A list of all the weather symbol descriptions
All information on marine weather can be found at one section which includes wind and air pressure forecasts, text-based weather reports for seafarers, water levels, wave heights and, in winter, up-to-date ice charts.
