Sea ice brings methane to central parts of the Arctic Ocean

A fresh study shows how the formation and movement of sea ice affect the drift of methane from continental shelves to central parts of the Arctic Ocean.

In the winter methane from ice that forms on continental shelves ends up back in the surface layers of sea water and not directly into the atmosphere like it does in summer when the seas on the continental shelves are largely ice-free.
