Research and development

The Finnish Meteorological Institute is a leading expert in meteorology, air quality, climate change, earth observation, marine and arctic research areas.

The main objective of the Finnish Meteorological Institute is to improve safety and quality of living of Finnish citizens. In order to do this the Finnish Meteorological Institute observes the physical state of the atmosphere, its chemical composition and electromagnetic phenomena.

The mission is to conduct research of high standard in the fields of meteorology, air quality, space physics, remote sensing and geomagnetism.

High-quality observational data and research is utilized to develop services to benefit our everyday life. Visible examples are improvement of weather forecasts, development of new expert and warning services as well as applications of the newest research results.
