Particulate matter concentrations were mapped at different heights in Helsinki in Mäkelänkatu street canyon. An unmanned aerial vehicle, also known as a drone, was used as moving measurement platform. Similar street canyon measurements of particulate matter have not been previously conducted in Finland.
Finnish Meteorological Institute, Tampere University of Technology, Aeromon Ltd. and Helsinki Regional Services Authority (HSY) conducted joint measurements of lung deposited surface area (LDSA) of particulate matter in a street canyon at Mäkelänkatu. The results showed that the concentration of LDSA decreased from 60 µm2/cm3 to 36–40 µm2/cm3 and further down to 16–26 µm2/cm3 when measured from the street level, roof top level and from 50 meters, respectively. Altogether, the LDSA concentration decreased a total of 65 % in the specific weather conditions of the measurement campaign.
The drone, which was as a moving measurement platform proved its usefulness and showed how new technology can be used also in atmospheric composition research.
Measurements conducted in the street canyon provide more detailed information on how particulate matter originating from the vehicle exhausts mixes with background air and dilutes. The effect of dilution is dependent on, for example, the geometry of the street canyon and prevailing weather conditions and therefore results like these can be utilized in e.g. urban planning and computational air quality models.
This research was part of TEKES INKA-ILMA/EAKR-project (Innovatiiviset kaupungit, TEKES nro: 4588/31/2015), funded by TEKES, European union, HSY, City of Tampere, City of Kuopio, Dekati Ltd., Genano Ltd., Nordic Envicon Ltd., Pegasor Ltd., Sandbox Ltd., Suomen Terveysilma, Trelab Ltd. and Vallox Ltd. The measurements were conducted in November 2016 at Mäkelänkatu 50, Helsinki.
