Satellite pictures can be used to evaluate regional density of ridges in pack ice fields

Ridges of pack ice are formed by ice floes pressing against each other. Ridges of pack ice form the most difficult obstacle for wintertime shipping.

The results indicate that satellite pictures can be used to accurately evaluate the degree of ridge density.
