Research of atmosphere-cryosphere interactions compiled in an e-book

Atmosphere and cryosphere are closely linked and therefore need to be investigated as an interdisciplinary subject.

For example, when atmospheric air pollutants, such as black carbon (BC) and dark volcanic dust aerosols, are deposited on snow and ice surfaces, they decrease surface albedo. Due to albedo-feedback, snow and ice are melting faster and seasonal snow cover earlier.

A new Frontiers in Earth Science e-book, comprising all the articles featured in the Research Topic of "Atmosphere – Cryosphere Interaction in the Arctic, at High Latitudes and Mountains With Focus on Transport, Deposition and Effects of Dust, Black Carbon, and Other Aerosols", has been compiled and is now available online.

The e-book starts with an editorial article, where the progress reached by the described collection of the published papers is introduced. The published papers include studies on cryosphere and atmosphere, aerosol and gases, both for natural and anthropogenic air pollution sources, and both for local air pollution and long-range transport of air pollution.

The e-book was published in February 2020 and is edited by Pavla Dagsson-Waldhauserova from the Agricultural University of Iceland, and Outi Meinander from the Finnish Meteorological Institute.
