Particle concentrator enables better time-resolution in aerosol mass spectrometry measurements

An Aerosol Dynamics Inc. concentrator (ADIc) provides a factor of 8–21 enrichment in the particles larger than 10 nm without significantly changing the size distribution or the chemistry of particles.

ADIc has been designed to improve online chemical characterization of ambient aerosols using aerosol mass spectrometry (AMS). Improved detection limits achieved with the ADIc are important especially in remote areas where particle concentrations are low and typically need long averaging periods.

Additionally, the use of the ADIc will be essential for improving source apportionment with quadrupole Aerosol Chemical Speciation Monitor (ACSM) data by gaining better time resolution and/or signal-to-noise ratio. The ADIc is a rather small in size and interfaced with the AMS without trouble. In this study, the ADIc-AMS system ran over a 1-month period at a field site without maintenance showing a good stability in operation.
