Forecasts for road conditions can be improved with mobile observations

Mobile observations can improve forecasts for road conditions in areas where there are few road weather information systems.

In the study, forecasts of road surface temperatures were made for road weather information systems located on the motorway between Helsinki and Turku. The forecasting model was given initial data of road surface temperature measurements, which were made by separate devices mounted on vehicles. Based on the results, the forecast using mobile observations was more accurate than the forecast that did not use observations from the road weather information systems.
