The ice in the Northern Bay of Bothnia has drifted north.
In the northern Bay of Bothnia off Tornio and Kemi, 40-60 cm thick fast ice to Kemi 3. Further to Kemi 1, 10-50 cm thick very close ridged ice and brash ice. From Oulu to Löyhänmutka, 25-45 cm thick fast ice. Further to Oulu 4, 20-35 cm thick ridged very close ice, in places difficult to force. Further to Holma, 10-25 cm thick very close ice and brash ice. Farther out and southward along the coast, thin very open ice.
In the southern Bay of Bothnia thin ice in the inner archipelago. Farther out, thin very open ice.
In the Quark in the Vaasa archipelago 5-10 cm thick level ice and brash ice to Ensten. Farther out, open water.
Icebreakers: Otso and Kontio assist in the northern Bay of Bothnia.
Assistance restrictions: Minimum ice class and deadweight required of assisted vessels:
Tornio, Kemi and Oulu, IA of more than 2000 tons.
Raahe, IB of more than 2000 tons.
Kalajoki, Kokkola and Pietarsaari, I of more than 2000 tons.
Vaasa, II of more than 2000 tons.
Vessels bound for Gulf of Bothnia ports in which assistance restrictions apply shall, when passing the latitude 60°00'N, report their nationality, name, port of destination, ETA and speed to ICE INFO on VHF channel 78. This report can also be given directly by phone +46 10 492 7600.
Vessels bound for a Finnish or Swedish port in the Quark or the Bay of Bothnia shall report to Bothnia VTS when passing the latitude 63°15'N on VHF channel 67.
The ice chart of the whole Baltic Sea (pdf) is published in the autumn twice a week (Monday and Thursday) and daily when the amount of ice increases until until ice break-up in spring. It represents current ice situation, ice breaker positions and assistance restrictions in the Baltic Sea.
The simplified charts are updated once a week at the latest on Tuesday morning. The first one represents measured level ice thicknesses, ice coverage and sea surface temperature. The reference charts represent average, 1965 – 1986, ice situation on that day (= normaali), last week´s situation, last year´s situation and the positions of the ice breakers.
