A joint measurement campaign of the Finnish Meteorological Institute and the University of Eastern Finland studied the combined effects of emissions from the burning of biomass and plant-based emissions on the formation of secondary organic compounds in the emission mix over time.
In the study the tests on ageing of emissions represent a new type of research, as previously each of the emission components had usually been allowed to age separately. Combining actual emissions has been difficult because different sources of emissions have been located far from each other. Research into emission mixes is made easier by new types of arrangements for experiments in which emission sources and the mutation chamber are located close to each other, as is the case in the ILMARI research unit of the University of Eastern Finland.
