Residues from pesticides and fire retardants that were banned decades ago are still present even in the air in Finland. The reason for this is that these permanent organic environmental toxins (referred to as POP compounds) easily travel long distances, degrade very slowly in air, soil and water and accumulate in organisms along the food chain. For this reason, these substances can still be detected in the air and in different ecosystems.
