Measurements on the precipitation and depth of snow have been made in Finland since the 1890s. Over the decades the measuring devices have developed, and nowadays there are automatic instruments in use. The study has compared the devices and practices used for measuring the precipitation, depth, and water value of snow in countries surrounding the northern polar region.
