FINNISH ICE REPORT 22.02.2018

New ice is forming in all sea areas and the ice gets thicker.

In the northern Bay of Bothnia there is 40-60 cm thick fast ice in the archipelago. At the fast ice edge there is 30-50 cm thick ridged consolidated drift ice to southwest of Kemi 1 and to Oulu 1. Farther out 15-30 cm thick rafted ice. The ice field is difficult to force in places. From Merikallat towards Malören runs a narrow lead covered with new ice. Southward from Marjaniemi, off the Finnish coast, there is 15-25 nautical miles wide area with 10-20 cm thick rafted ice.

In the southern Bay of Bothnia there is 20-40 cm thick fast ice in the archipelago. Farther out there is a wide area with 5-20 cm thick rafted ice. Farther west 20-40 cm thick very close ice.

In the Quark 5-15 cm thick level ice and some thicker floes. In Vaasa archipelago there is 20–40 cm thick fast ice to Ensten. Farther out 5-15 cm thick level ice.

In the Sea of Bothnia 10-30 cm thick fast ice in the inner archipelago. Off the fast-ice edge there is thin drift ice and new ice.

In the Archipelago Sea thin level ice and new ice.

In the western Gulf of Finland 10-20 cm thick ice in the inner archipelago. Farther out thin very close ice and new ice from 10 nautical miles south of Bengtskär to Naissaar.

In the eastern Gulf of Finland 15-30 cm thick fast ice in the archipelago. Off the fast ice 10-25 cm thick rafted very close ice to the line Eestiluoto - Tiiskeri - Haapasaari. Farther out new ice and ice formation to the Estonian coast.

Icebreakers: Kontio, Polaris and Urho assist in the northern Bay of Bothnia. Otso assists in the southern Bay of Bothnia. Thetis assists in the Quark and in the Sea of Bothnia. Voima and Sisu assist in the Gulf of Finland.

Restrictions to navigation: Minimum ice class and deadweight required of assisted vessels:
Tornio, Kemi and Oulu, IA of more than 4000 tons.
Raahe, Kalajoki, Kokkola and Pietarsaari, IA of more than 2000 tons.
Vaasa, IA and IB of more than 2000 tons and IC and II of more than 3000 tons.
Kaskinen, Kristiinankaupunki, Pori, Rauma, Uusikaupunki, Taalintehdas, Förby, Koverhar, Inkoo, Kantvik and Helsinki, I and II of more than 2000 tons.
Sköldvik, IA and IB of more than 2000 tons and IC and II of more than 3000 tons.
Loviisa, Kotka and Hamina, IA and IB of more than 2000 tons.

Alterations to the restrictions: Minimum ice class and deadweight required of assisted vessels from 24th February:
Raahe and Kalajoki, IA of more than 4000 tons.
From 26th February:
Vaasa, IA and IB of more than 2000 tons.
Uusikaupunki, IA and IB of more than 2000 tons and IC and II of more than 3000 tons.
Naantali and Turku, I and II of more than 2000 tons.

Vessels bound for Gulf of Bothnia ports in which traffic restrictions apply shall, when passing the latitude 60°00'N, report their nationality, name, port of destination, ETA and speed to ICE INFO on VHF channel 78. This report can also be given directly by phone +46 31 699 100.

Vessels bound for ports in the Bay of Bothnia shall report to Bothnia VTS on VHF channel 67 20 NM before Nordvalen lighthouse.

The traffic separation schemes in the Quark are temporarily out of use.

About the charts

The ice chart of the whole Baltic Sea (pdf) is published in the autumn twice a week (Monday and Thursday) and daily when the amount of ice increases until until ice break-up in spring. It represents current ice situation, ice breaker positions and traffic restrictions in the Baltic Sea.

The simplified charts are updated once a week at the latest on Tuesday morning. The first one represents measured level ice thicknesses, ice coverage and sea surface temperature. The reference charts represent average, 1965 – 1986, ice situation on that day (= normaali), last week´s situation, last year´s situation and the positions of the ice breakers.
